If you’ve ever sat in a meeting tapping your pen, found yourself mindlessly biting your nails while watching TV, or noticed your fingers doing a restless little dance during a stressful moment, I want you to take a deep breath.

You are entirely in good company.

I’ll let you in on a little secret: even while I’m sitting here at my computer, my left thumb is instinctively reaching over to spin the band on my finger.

I’m Charlotte, the maker behind Charlotte Mari, and I have incredibly busy hands.

While I spend my days at a jewellery bench, soldering, polishing, and shaping metal, my hands are constantly active. But the moment I step away from the tools, that physical energy doesn't just disappear. It lingers. For a long time, I didn't really know what to do with that restless energy during quiet moments - until I started making and wearing spinner rings.

We recently shared a little glimpse of our spinner collection on social media, and the response blew me away. So many of you messaged saying, “Oh my goodness, that is exactly what I need,” or “I had no idea these existed!”

Because so many of you wanted to know more, I wanted to sit down, grab a cuppa, and write a proper, honest guide to these beautiful pieces. Consider this an introduction to a wonderfully tactile, ancient tool that might just bring a little bit of calm to your everyday routine - or to someone you love who struggles to sit still.

What exactly is a spinner ring?

If you’ve never seen one up close, a spinner ring (sometimes called a worry ring, a fidget ring, or a meditation ring) is a clever bit of jewellery engineering.

It starts with a wide, solid base band that sits comfortably against your skin. Stacked loosely on top of that base are one, two, or sometimes three smaller, independent bands. These outer bands are trapped in place by the flared edges of the wider ring, meaning they can never slip off, but they are completely free to glide and spin around the main band.

When you wear one, you can use your thumb to gently flick, slide, spin or roll the outer bands around your finger. It is a completely fluid, smooth, and incredibly satisfying calming motion.

In our Porthcawl Studio, we handcraft these using contrasting textures. We might pair a chunky, hammered sterling silver base with slim, twisted wire bands, or add a pop of warm gold texture to catch the light. The result is a piece of jewellery that is visually high-impact and makes a beautiful statement, but carries a hidden, deeply functional secret.

From Ancient Tibet to modern desks: A beautiful history

While 'fidget toys' might feel like a very modern invention designed for our screen-heavy lives, the concept of the spinner ring actually dates back thousands of years.

They are believed to have originated from ancient Tibetan meditation traditions. In these practices, long before the hustle and bustle of modern life, people used 'prayer wheels' - cylinders engraved with sacred texts that were spun rhythmically to help quiet the mind, focus attention, and invite a sense of peace during prayer or meditation.

Eventually, artisans shrunk this beautiful, functional concept down into something that could be worn on a finger, creating the very first meditation rings. The ancient belief was that the gentle, repetitive act of spinning the ring had a naturally calming, grounding effect on both the mind and body.

I love the thought that when we spin our rings today to cope with a hectic work deadline or a bout of anxiety, we are connecting with a gentle ritual that people have been using to find quiet moments for centuries.

Why our minds crave something to 'fidget' with

Let's talk about why our hands get so restless in the first place.

Whether you are navigating anxiety, worry, grief, managing ADHD, or simply trying to maintain your attention during a long day, restless fingers are often just our body's natural way of trying to regulate itself.

When our minds are overwhelmed, anxious, or overstimulated, that internal tension needs an escape route. For many of us, that manifests as physical fidgeting. We bounce our legs, we click out pens, we tap the desk, we bite our nails, or we scroll mindlessly on our phones.

Conversely, if you have a creative, fast-moving brain (like mine), a lack of stimulation can make it hard to focus. Having something physical to touch can act as a 'background track' for your hands, giving your body just enough subtle stimulation to allow your mind to concentrate on the task at hand.

This is where the magic of an adult fidget ring comes in.

Unlike bright plastic gadgets, a beautifully crafted silver or gold spinner ring is completely discreet. It doesn't look like a therapeutic tool; it looks like a gorgeous piece of artisan jewellery. You can wear it to a formal dinner, an important business meeting, or while picking the kids up from school. No one else has to know that you are using it to soothe an anxious thought or ground yourself during a stressful conversation. It’s your own private pocket of calm, in your hands.

Finding the perfect piece for your hands

Because we handcraft these pieces, we’ve learned a lot about what makes a spinner ring feel just right on your hand. If you’re discovering these for the first time, here are a few things to keep in mind to find a style that fits your personal style and needs :

1. The Power of Texture

One of the reasons our spinners are such a talking point is the way we mix textures. We love creating bands with a heavily hammered finish, subtle ripples, or intricate twists. For someone with an anxious mind or high sensory awareness, running your fingertips over these distinct ridges can be just as calming as the spinning motion itself. It’s a wonderful grounding technique - focusing purely on the physical sensation of the cool, textured metal against your skin.

2. Sizing is Key

Because spinner rings are typically designed with a wider base band, they fit a little tighter than a traditional, skinny wire ring. If you are browsing our online collection, we always recommend going up a size or two from your normal ring size to ensure it slides on comfortably and gives your finger room to breathe. (Of course, if you are local to South Wales, you can always pop into our Porthcawl studio, and we will happily measure you)

3. Mixing Your Metals

If you are someone who loves a timeless look but wants versatility, a mixed-metal spinner is a beautiful option. Pairing a bright sterling silver base with a slim band of warm, solid gold means it will effortlessly match whatever other jewellery you wear daily. It becomes an elegant, hard-working staple of your daily jewellery.

A gift with genuine thought behind it

If you aren't looking for yourself, a spinner ring is one of the most thoughtful, empathetic gifts you can give to someone else.

We often have customers come into the shop looking for something special for a loved one - perhaps a daughter heading off to university, a friend navigating a difficult period of burnout, or a partner who is notoriously restless during long car journeys.

Giving someone a worry ring is a beautiful way of saying, “I see you”. It’s a gift that goes so much deeper than just fashion; it’s a gift of comfort and function.
